Great News🏆: Eight AI Cube Lab Class of 2024 Undergraduates Receive "Learning Power" Awards
The results of the AI Cube Lab "Learning Power" award series have been announced. Based on the Learning Power bonus points in the 2024 Comprehensive Quality Assessment of the School of Advanced Manufacturing, eight Class of 2024 undergraduates received awards: four High Distinction, two Distinction and two Merit.

Recently, the results of the “Learning Power” award series at the Advanced Intelligent Manufacturing Laboratory of Sun Yat-sen University (AI Cube Lab) were announced. Based on the Learning Power bonus points in the 2024 Comprehensive Quality Assessment of the School of Advanced Manufacturing, eight Class of 2024 undergraduates from the laboratory received awards: four Learning Power High Distinction, two Learning Power Distinction and two Learning Power Merit.
Background
The Comprehensive Quality Assessment is an important basis on which the university evaluates students’ all-round development. Beyond academic grades, the School of Advanced Manufacturing assesses students along three dimensions: Learning Power, Thinking Power and Action Power. Learning Power reflects students’ commitment and achievements in independent learning beyond the curriculum, including research training and academic competitions, and is a direct indicator of an undergraduate’s capacity for innovation and potential for growth.
In response to the university’s call to promote students’ comprehensive development, and to recognize students with outstanding Learning Power and further inspire their interest in research, the laboratory established the Learning Power award series for its Class of 2024 undergraduates on the proposal of Prof. Jianshe Feng. The awards use the objective results of the Comprehensive Quality Assessment as their basis.
Criteria
Awards are based on the actual Learning Power bonus points in the 2024 Comprehensive Quality Assessment of the School of Advanced Manufacturing, rounded to one decimal place, with each student receiving the highest level reached:

Growth Behind the Awards
Since joining the laboratory, the Class of 2024 undergraduates have progressed step by step from coursework to research practice under the guidance of faculty and graduate students. The laboratory organized project groups around directions such as intelligent agents and prognostics and health management (PHM), and provided systematic training through regular group meetings, topical presentations and mock competitions, guiding students to learn cutting-edge methods through real problems.
Building on this, the laboratory follows a “one project, multiple competitions” training approach, using research projects to drive both the College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program and academic competitions. In 2026, both undergraduate innovation projects led by Class of 2024 students under the laboratory’s guidance were approved at the national level, sweeping all such slots for the School of Advanced Manufacturing that year. Through sustained effort in research and competition preparation, the students also achieved outstanding results in the Learning Power dimension of the Comprehensive Quality Assessment.
Significance
Learning power is the foundation of research ability. For undergraduates, the willingness to learn proactively and stay committed beyond the classroom often determines how far they can go in research and engineering practice. By establishing the Learning Power award series, the laboratory recognizes students’ efforts over the past year and, through clear and measurable criteria, sets role models that foster a diligent, mutually motivating atmosphere among its undergraduates.
The laboratory has long been committed to “rooting research in real industrial problems and cultivating talent in real engineering scenarios,” encouraging undergraduates to join the laboratory and engage with research as early as possible. These awards are a milestone achievement of the laboratory’s ongoing undergraduate training system. The laboratory will continue to improve its incentive and training mechanisms, encouraging more students to receive systematic training at the intersection of artificial intelligence and intelligent manufacturing, and striving to cultivate interdisciplinary innovators with solid theoretical foundations and outstanding engineering practice skills.
